Japanese machine tool recovery hopes for Chinese market

"Japan'smacro-economyisinaseveresituationofrapiddeterioration,sothemachinetoolindustryhasbeenhit.""Chinaistheworld'slargestconsumerofmachinetools,andintheChinesemarket,JapanisChina'slargestsupplier,"saidMiyakeInaba,vicepresidentofJapanMachineToolIndustryAssociation,duringthe11thChinaInternationalMachineToolExhibitionByimplication,theChinesemarketwillbethelifesavingstrawfortherecoveryofJapanesemachinetools.Attheexhibition,therewere46companiesfromJapan,withatotalexhibitionareaof6300squaremeters.Machinetoolsareknownasthe"motherofindustry".Thequality,renewalspeed,straincapacityandefficiencyofmechanicalproductsalldependonthemachinetoolsthatprocesstheproductstoaconsiderableextent.Thedevelopmentdataofmachinetoolindustrycanrevealsomebasicinformationofacountry'sindustry.Japan'scurrenteconomyhasbeenaffectedbytheworldfinancialcrisisinthesecondhalfoflastyear,andthemainmarketsinEuropeandtheUnitedStatescontinuetobedepressed,whiletheyenhasbeenappreciating,directlyimpactingtheexportindustry.Therefore,enterprisesarerestraininginvestmentinequipment,andthetrendofproductionreductionisobvious.Asaresult,thesituationofdomesticenterprisesinJapanhasbeengreatlydeteriorated,andtherehasneverbeenadecline.In2008,Japan'seconomicgrowthratewasnegative0.6%,whichwasthenegativegrowthagaininnineyears.Theeconomicdownturnisdirectlyreflectedinordersfromthemachinetoolindustry.From2006and2007tothefirsthalfof2008,aftersustainedhigh-speedgrowth,fromthesecondhalfof2008,theamountofmachinetoolordersreceivedbyJapanhasturneddownsharply,andthedeclinehasexpandedmonthbymonth,untilNovemberandDecemberofthatyear,lessthan50%comparedwiththesamemonthofthepreviousyear.Inthewholeyear,thetotalordervolumedecreasedbyabout18%comparedwiththepreviousyear,reaching130.1billionyen,andthegrowthinthefirsthalfoftheyeardisappeared.Fromtheperspectiveofinternalandexternaldemand,duetothedecreaseofnewordersreceivedandtheincreaseofdeliverydelayandcancellationofordersreceived,ithasdecreasedby22%comparedwiththepreviousyear.Thisisthefirsttimesince2002thattherehasbeenadouble-digitnegativegrowtheverysixyears,andthedeclinehasexceededtheexternaldemand.Amongthem,exceptforsteel,non-ferrousmetalsandaviation,shipbuilding,transportmachinery,governmentandpublicinstitutions,allindustriesarelowerthanthelevelofthepreviousyear,andthedomesticdemandratiohasalsodroppedtoabout44%,thelowestlevelever.Intermsofforeigndemand,themainmarketsinEurope,NorthAmericaandAsiaallsawdemandshrinkinthesecondhalfoflastyear,andtheoverallordervolumedecreasedbyabout15%comparedwiththepreviousyear.Fortunately,theamountofordersreceivedis734.3billionyen,whichisonlylowerthantherecordhighlevelin2007.Amongthem,theorderamountfromChinais129billionyuan,whichisabout19%lessthanthepreviousyear.However,itaccountsforahighproportionofthewholeforeigndemand,accountingforabout18%ofJapan'simportantforeigndemandmarketasawhole.Atthe2008JapanInternationalMachineToolExhibition(JIMTOF),largemachinetoolmanufacturersinChinaalsoofficiallydisplayedforthefirsttime,attractingpeople'sattention.Nowadays,withthedepressionofmacro-economy,thesituationofJapanesemachinetoolindustryismoresevere.TheacceptedordersinFebruarywereabout20.4billionyen,adecreaseofabout84%comparedwiththesamemonthlastyear,butanincreaseofabout7%comparedwithJanuary,givingaglimmerofhope.Butdoesthecoldwinterofmachinetoolindustrystophere?Mr.Chuangisstillcautious,sayingitneedstobepublishedinthenearfuture.
